Sulfuric acid or sulphuric acid, known in antiquity as oil of vitriol, is a mineral acid composed of the elements sulfur, oxygen, and hydrogen, with the molecular formula H₂SO₄. It is a colorless, odorless, and viscous liquid that is miscible with water.
Sulfuric acid is a colorless oily liquid. It is soluble in water with release of heat. It is corrosive to metals and tissue.
Sulphuric acid is highly acidic. Therefore, it is used in the cleaning of metals, removal of impurities from oil, manufacturing of chemicals – nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, synthesis of dye, drugs, detergents, explosives, etc.
